FBISD’s Even Start Program Recognized As Commended By Texas LEARNS

Texas LEARNS, the State Office for Adult Education and Family Literacy, has recognized Fort Bend Independent School District’s Even Start Program as “Commended” for the 2008-2009 school year.

The Even Start Literacy Program is designed to break the cycle of poverty and low literacy in families. Parents acquire basic skills, including English and life skills, and have the opportunity to earn a high school diploma or pass their General Educational Development test. Programs are measured on 16 indicators of participant outcomes, including child and parent academic achievement.

Commended is the highest possible rating for Even Start programs in Texas. Programs meeting or exceeding the standards for 14-16 indicators earned a Commended rating. FBISD’s Even Start Program is led by Mary Jackson, special programs director; and Alice Gayle, Even Start coordinator.
