News

A sparse candidate list for the Missouri City council elections more than doubled by the filing deadline, and District B Councilwoman Cynthia Lenton-Gary is challenging Mayor Allen Owen, who has held the top seat since 1994.

Lenton-Gary’s term was set to expire in 2011.

Long-time Councilman Jerry Wyatt is also being challenged for his At-Large Position 1 Seat. Service Manager Anthony Maroulis filed Monday for the seat.

Four candidates will be on the ballot for the At-Large Position 2. Long-time Councilman Buddy Jimerson announced previously he will not run again.

On the ballot will be business owner Danny Nguyen, insurance executive Judith Dupre, planner Yolanda Ford and healthcare administrator Kevin Tunstall.

Candidates will draw for their place on the ballot at 8 a.m. today in City Hall Council Chambers, 1522 Texas Parkway.

I agree, it is good to see so many active and involved citizens in their local government. I do wonder why their doesn’t seem to be that interest in the SL council races. Let’s hope it doesn’t hurt turn-out in the school trustee elections especially during this critical time in the district budget. I hear it is going up to a 21 million dollar deficit next year and they have declared a financial emergency.

I am please to see the challenge in the upcoming mayoral race. It is sad that the residents have so much power to change things if they would just get out and vote.

When people are in office for a long period of time I think they forget their reason for being in office, they get comfortable.

Residents of Missouri City I urge you to get out and vote, not for a name but for what is behind the name and for what is right. We have let so many honest people miss out in serving our community by not voting. Let’s not let it happen again.

    It just got interesting…

To those of you running: Don’t avoid Quail Valley. You will not get elected if you don’t garner at least some support from QV.

Hopefully all candidates will address all neighborhoods city-wide. With the home foreclosure rates at all time highs and resales very slow, I can’t see them doing anything else. To keep raising taxes in this environment as Allen Owen has continued to do year end and year out needs to be addressed, especially since they have pushed their ETJ across the Brazos River for the hungry Houston developer friends of this guy. Aren’t you all tired of paying for his buddies projects and constant expansion on your backs???

This is great news! I heard Sugar Land is going to cancel their elections because of lack of interest.

The number of candidate filings are a clear indicator that the public wants a bigger voice in future City Council decisions, which is great! Many of these candidates are clearly qualified for office and appear to be closer to the mainstream than the current office holders. I am looking forward to contributing both monetarily and otherwise to their campaigns. Lets get the votes out for our candidates!

It is always good to see this much interest in local elections. Let’s hope the public can sort through the “machine” candidates and those seeking to truly serve the public. Good luck to all!
