Sugar Land residents are being invited to take part in a commercial being filmed to convince Google of overwhelming community support to select Sugar Land as the proving ground for the next generation of the Internet.
The commercial will be shot at a public rally in Sugar Land Town Square during Friday’s intermission of a concert by the Grady Skelton Band – a high-energy country, southern rock, Americana group.
The concert begins at 7 p.m., with the rally expected to occur around 8:15 p.m.
Free Ben & Jerry’s ice cream will be provided to the first 200 people who complete a survey intended to determine the public’s support for an ultra high-speed Internet pilot project in Sugar Land.
Google has announced plans to build the infrastructure for a pilot project that will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today – more than 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections.
As part of the initial selection process, Sugar Land must demonstrate community support for Google’s pilot project.
The commercial being filmed on Saturday is one way to convey Sugar Land’s excitement for ultra-high speed Internet, organizers said. Participants are encouraged to bring signs that communicate public support, or just show up and take advantage of several “Make Your Own Poster” stations that will be set up during the concert.
There will also be several computer stations providing access to Sugar Land’s Think GIG website and Facebook page where visitors are encouraged to complete a survey and post messages or videos expressing support for the City’s application.
