SLFD Annual Report Shows Most Calls For Service Are For Ambulances

The Sugar Land Fire Department’s annual report indicates that all vacancies were filled in 2009 and the department began planning for a seventh fire station. The majority of SLFD’s 6,347 total calls for service in 2009 continued to focus on emergency medical response, which totaled 3,617.

Other accomplishments highlighted during Fire Chief Juan J. Adame’s presentation included an audit, inspection and replacement of all firefighter bunker gear.

“Our goal is to enhance the quality of life in our community through effective and efficient public safety education, fire prevention and emergency response,” said Adame.  “Responding to the needs of our customers with a professional, well equipped workforce is an important part of achieving our mission.”

During 2009, SLFD responded to 28 structure fires and successfully contained 70 percent to the rooms where the fires started. Fire inspectors reviewed 1,242 plans and performed 2,065 inspections in 2009.  Included among these were five major high-occupancy projects, including two hospitals, two high-rise buildings and one hotel.

Public education fire officers reached almost 37,000 residents last year through programs such as station tours, site visits, school drills, senior programs, training activities and more.

SLFD’s will continue to place a priority on training and plans for the city’s continued growth during 2010, according to Adame.  The department will also focus on an organizational management study that will examine efficient delivery of services.
