The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the Fort Bend County area and throughout the Houston region effective Saturday afternoon through 7 p.m. Sunday.

Strong northwest winds will be developing in the wake of a line of showers and thunderstorms associated with a cold front.  The weather service described the front as “potent.”

“Sustained winds of 20-25 mph with higher gusts can be expected late this afternoon in the early evening hours, then should relax slightly,” the weather service advisory said. “Near the coast, winds of 20-30 mph will be likely and continue through the night.”

After sunrise, winds inland will begin to increase again and sustained winds of 15-20 mph, with gusts near 30 mph, will be possible during the day Sunday.

The weather service cautioned drivers of vans, campers, trailers and other high-profile vehicles to be alert to the dangers posed by the winds, especially when driving along northeast-to-southwest oriented roads.

There will be an 80 percent chance of rain through Saturday, dropping to a 30 percent chance Saturday evening. Overnight temperatures are expected to drop into the mid- to low-30s as the cold front passes through the area.

Clearing is expected for Sunday, with sunny skies and gusty winds. The Sunday afternoon high will be in the high 50s before dropping into the high 30s Sunday night.

Dry roads are expected for Monday morning’s commute ahead of a mostly sunny day with highs in the upper 60s.
