Sugar Land police arrested and charged four teens with one count of residential burglary and two counts of attempted residential burglary. Detectives are investigating the group’s participation in at least five additional burglaries.
Joseph Cantu, 17, of Sugar Land, and three juveniles ranging in age from 15 to 16 were apprehended on the afternoon of March 22 shortly after breaking into a home in the 14100 block of Anson and attempting to burglarize two nearby homes.
A woman at one of the homes told police she heard the doorbell ring and went upstairs to look outside. She saw several people attempting to force their way into her house, so she called police.
Three of the teens later admitted to their participation in five similar Sugar Land crimes that mostly occurred north of U.S. Highway 90A on March 10 and March 12. Detectives have recovered some of the property from the burglaries.
In each case, the teens rang a doorbell or knocked on a door during the afternoon when most people are at work. When no one answered, they forced entry through the back of the homes. Video from a surveillance system at one of the houses showed the thieves committing the crime.
Residents are reminded to immediately contact police if they see someone suspicious in their neighborhoods. Most burglars look for homes that appear unoccupied.
