Inaugural Cross Creek Ranch Fine Arts Festival To Debut April 10

Ten Katy area artists will be among those featured at the inaugural Cross Creek Ranch Fine Arts Festival on Saturday, April 10, in Fulshear’s Cross Creek Ranch.

ART FESTIVAL – The inaugural Cross Creek Ranch Art Festival will take place Saturday, April 10, at Fulshear’s Cross Creek Ranch.

In addition to the local talent, the festival will also feature artists from across Texas, all displaying their work in an outdoor setting.

Houston art promoter Mitch Cohen organized the event after being asked to help the Katy-Fulshear area develop its own art presence. An artist himself, Cohen, called the area “the perfect location to field a spring art festival,” and the Cross Creek Ranch Fine Arts Festival was born.

The ten Katy area artists will be among more than fifty who will be featured. Local artists include Gabriela Monterroso, Lois Morton, Michael J. Peyton, Vanessa and Jose Soso, Susan E. Russell, Camille Cain, David Laufenberg, Nita Risher McGlawn and Adrianna Whitney.

Whitney, a self-taught folk artist who works primarily on canvas and wood, also experiments with diverse mediums like paper and buttons, as well as creating primitive cloth and clay dolls with an antique feeling.

“My style is native most of the time, but I love stepping out and painting my own rendition of some famous Renaissance artists,” Whitney said.

McGlawn’s works run the art spectrum, including portraiture, watercolor, collage, mixed media, graphic art and illustration.  A graduate of the University of Alabama, she is now working on her master’s degree in art education at the University of Houston.

During the festival, McGlawn will also introduce the Katy Area Artists organization. An adult art league, Katy Area Artists is a network of artists and patrons, focusing on educational, mentoring and exhibition opportunities for adults in the Katy area.

Peyton is self-taught artist who likes to show different examples of what can be done with a Sharpie pen. Whether working with gourds or on canvas, his creations showcase intricate details. Snake sculptures and shaman kachinas are his specialty.

Not everyone at the festival will be an artist. Cain, for example, is a soap maker who gets “artsy” with her soap bars.

Cammie’s Handmade Soaps will be part of a small market, area as Cohen called it.

“When I was putting this festival together I realized the Fulshear residents would probably love a farmers market, too. So, in addition to the art, I hope to have a few area produce farmers and vendors like Cammie’s and David Laufenberg – also known affectionately as “The Olive Oil Guy,” Cohen said.

Hours for the festival will be 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

The Cross Creek Ranch Art Festival will take place in the Cross Creek Ranch master-planned community, just east Fulshear on FM 1093.
