Missouri City Mayor Allen Owen, facing an opponent for only the third time since 1994, says he has demonstrated a commitment to residents and shown he can guide the city’s growth.
Owen will face current District B Councilwoman Cynthia Lenton-Gary in the May 8 election. Owen was opposed in the last two elections by Greyling Poats and was re-elected both times.
“This city has a great population of families and businesses that care about its future,” said Owen. “I have demonstrated throughout my adult life my commitment to its citizens and its commerce. I have shown I can guide its growth while listening to the wisdom of those that have invested their lives, home and businesses here.”
Owen and his wife of 42 years Jane Owen have lived in Missouri City nearly 35 years and raised their three children there.
Owen said he is running to continue his service to the city and community, and said he had led the city over the past few years in attracting millions of dollars of private business investment, public works infrastructure improvements and park growth, hike and bike trails and providing for better public safety by boosting city police and fire forces.
Owen said it was those efforts that landed the city on the list of the country’s safest cities and one of the top 100 cities in the nation to live in.
“We have leadership in place in this city with the council and department heads that are driven to make this the best city it can be for seniors, growing families and emerging businesses,” said Owen. “I have seen where this city has come from and with this community working together I know where we can take it. These are challenging times. Together as one of the country’s most diverse cities, we can continue to move forward with purpose and prosperity for all our city’s population.”
Owen is a local bank area manager and volunteer, committing hours to YMCA, United Way and March of Dimes and as a Fort Bend Chamber, Fort Bend County Women’s Center and Fort Bend Literacy Council Advisory Board Member. He also is a Lifetime member of the Fort Bend Fair Association and vice-chairman on the Fort Bend Community Justice Council. Owen is a lifetime VP and director of Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, past-president of Texas 4H Foundation, and president of the Asian American Family Counseling Center. He and his wife are members of the First United Methodist Church in Missouri City. He graduated from Southern Methodist University’s Graduate School of Finance and Banking and from Stephen F. Austin State University.

Mary, I still do not beleive that you have done research on the other candidates. What can you tell us about the other four. Who is Yolanda and Judith? Who is the opponent to Wyatt? What is their platform? Serioulsy! I applaud you for not using a pseudo name and Props on your nominatation but maybe you should log in as McCLUELESS. You are not clued in as you say you are. I urge Voters not readers (some folks don’t live here) to give everyone a chance. Use Google, facebook and other internet tools to at least read up on the other Candidates. That is my plan. At the end of the day I will have “researched” and made my decision. Who knows it could the same recommendations you are making Owen, Wyatt and the Commi OR JUST MAYBE be WE MIGHT GET SOME NEW representation.
As to southerncomforts first comment above on 3. April 2010 at 12:15 pm:
“I just wonder if this means that Owen and Wyatt as well as Ruben Davis support Danny’s statements on doing business with communist regimes that he has pointed the finger at locally while pretending in MC public forums to have been a victim of those same regimes.”
As a good, law abiding, conservative, native-born European-American having personally visited & conducted business in Vietnam, I KNOW first hand that doing business in Vietnam is, like here in the U.S. & almost every other nation, doing business with private citizens, privately-owned partnerships, corporations, non-government organziations, & yes, the government itself. Danny’s statements promoting CAPITALISM is by its very nature ANTI-COMMUNIST. You MUST win the hearts & minds of people to get them to understand our way of life.
I have to think to myself how ignorant a person must be to think otherwise. The best way to battle communism, socialism, facism, or any other way of life we hold anti-thetical to our American way of life is to encourage individualism through capitalism. SouthernComfort’s thinly veiled support of Tunstall’s candidacy shows itself clearly to any thinking person in his bid, that attacking Nguyen is just another tactic to unseat the current city “regime”. If Southercomfort really beleives what he is saing, my only explanation is maybe he has been drinking his namesake too much to think clearly…
Looks like you are confusing political regimes with economic. There is a definite difference between capitalism and democracy. You may need a history lesson.
BTW, China currently claims a political regime of communism while claiming to have a burgeoning capitalism.
Ahmajinedad denied the Holocaust too.
Did you make sure the campaign ok’d that message?
mores, what you will find out about those that say they do research often means they don’t care what is exposed about the machine candidates they will simply defend them at all costs. For example Danny Ngyuen, an Owen backed candidate, recently is involved in a very controversial issue in Houston which has about 19-20 anti-communist asian-american organizations protesting against him for statements he made in defense of the very regime he claims to have escaped. He is strongly endorsed by Mayor Owen and has been a member of these very organizations at one time or another who are now boycotting him for his pro-communist stance. They’ve kicked him out… I just wonder if this means that Owen and Wyatt as well as Ruben Davis support Danny’s statements on doing business with communist regimes that he has pointed the finger at locally while pretending in MC public forums to have been a victim of those same regimes. Very duplicit, even some of his closest friends and mentors are now supporting his opposition candidate who are pro-democracy and for lower taxes, namely Kevin Tunstall.
How’s that for real research? Danny also serves on a special interest taxing and reinvestment zone that was set-up for one of the mayor’s biggest Houston developer givers that is in a prime commercial area that doesn’t need these taxpayer dollars to grow (corporate welfare) and creates a hole in the city budget that must be made up from other sources:

More to come on this and Danny’s poor business dealings and problems….
Now off to more block-walking to show these documents to voters, taxpayers and homeowners. They have every right to see who the mayor is running for office. He seems to like vulnerable candidates (he has backed 3 recently with over 12,000 in Texas Ethics Commission Fines–another fact some will ignore)…

Mary, it doesn’t sound like you have done much research on the other candidates. There are 4 for the At large 2 and 1 for At Large 1. I respect the fact that you are pushing the slate of Owen, Wyatt and Sidekick, that your perogative but I think we owe it to ourselves and Mo. City to at least look into the others.
In the 15 years of being a resident in Missouri City I have not had a Candidate come to my door. Just the other day Anthony Marulis did. He has a very impressive platform, he is energetic and Pro Family. What impressed me most is that he, his wife and kids are out there earning each Vote. Not like some of the others who use mailers and their hired guns. He earned my Vote and the neighbors around me. We need new ideas.
It’s time for Wyatt to go. I’m glad to hear Anthony is walking the subdivisions with his family. I met the Tunstalls and the Garys the other day doing the same thing. Let’s hope they have time to meet more families and voters with the truncated election cycle that Owen has created for Missouri City residents only allowing signage out 30 days before election day unlike other areas of the county, which set it at 30 days before early voting and no limits in other areas. From what I’ve seen they’ve turned the cities cable station into an Owen propaganda station run by the cities communications office, no real news gets out on it. They didn’t even mention the removal of the homeowners exemption ballot measure when he initiated that unpopular move.
And yes you are right about the “hired guns”. The deep pockets always hire the same political consultants and marketing types to spread lies about the challengers but it looks like it has failed on at least 2 fairly recent election cycles with the public voting in two non-machine backed (non-Owen) candidates.
Keep up the good work and keep knocking and talking, it really does have an impact!
All of you may be interested in this article on how Ms. Gary stood up to the boys on this tax increase they voted over her:
http://www.fortbendnow.com/2009/10/20/41553
This says it all. Shame on Wyatt and Owen!
And I still think it is very hypocritical of you to push an issue like, “they don’t need a homeowners exemption ballot measure so they can decide” because Owen knows better than the average voter? It’s also hypocritical because you do not pay property taxes in the city and it is no skin off your back.
Missouri City Voters: If Mayor Owen’s opponent’s blockwalkers come to your door, please ask them if Cynthia voted to take the Homestead Exemption off the ballot. Would you rather have a $26 tax deduction or have 5 more police officers on the street? That is what the Mayor and Council did with the $26. It was a 7-0 vote and Cynthia was outwardly supportive of it. Would you rather pay a little more in taxes to have good streets, drainage, preservation of the QVCC, police and fire protection that made the City one of the safest cities in the nation with parks, and all the other things the City offers? Perhaps that is why the City continues to grow as quickly as they are.
(Reiterating in case readers do not have time to read through my posts from the beginning of this thread)…and please, Vote for Mayor Owen, Missouri City!
That’s the exact spin that came out of the cities communications office and the ValleyView News, the e-newsletter that campaigns every cycle for Owen even though they have an ongoing IRS investigation for attempting to raise funds for one of his developer backed candidates who lost last year by quite a bit. I wonder if the voters know he uses their tax dollars for coordinated campaign attack ads like these misusing the city communications office. Amazing your tripe came out at the same time as theirs.
Anthony and Tunstall have both spoken in favor of the homeowners exemption and all Owen can do it this? He ties all his tax increases to police and fire but rarely increases their funding or patrol strength but he sure did make sure one of his big Houston development companies got $600,000 for a bottom land purchase last year which just happens to be the same amount that the homeowners exemption would have produced.
So the opposition information can just as easily say the same thing and continue to block-walk and ask WHY HASN’T THE MAYOR INCREASED THE PATROL OFFICERS ON THE STREET AND WHY DID THE CITY SLIP ON THE CQ DATA FROM #22 TO #48 IN ONE YEAR ALONG?
THEY ALSO WILL BE TOLD THE TRUTH ABOUT WHY THE FIRE DEPT RIDES ONLY 3 ON A TRUCK AND WHY THAT IS DETRIMENTAL TO HOMEOWNERS AND SMALL BUSINESS COMMUNITY AND THEIR INSURANCE COSTS…..try to get the city PR people to respin that sad fact….
OR get them to misinform on the S&P report last year as to why the cities BOND rating was lower than Sugar Lands based on the over-taxing burden and levels of taxing districts…..do you all need more that our large group of block-walkers are taking door to door?
Keep trying, but most see through the chaff campaign worker mcclure.
This really says it all,
“When asked why he is again seeking to serve the voters of Missouri City, Tunstall said that the current administration has continued to raise taxes and bond debt over the years and have little to show for it.
“They hire lobbyists with our tax dollars, who then act in opposition to the interests of our local businesses and families by opposing appraisal and property tax rate reforms”, Tunstall said in his campaign press release.
“Last week the mayor pulled a ballot initiative that would have given the voters of Missouri City the option to implement a universal homestead exemption which they currently are denied. Missouri City is one of the few cities in the area that does not offer this to its residents. Why would the mayor or any city official first offer the public this choice and then remove it, all within a month or two?” Tunstall said in the release.
“It’s time for true fiscal responsibility and prudent actions in these tough times and to remember who placed us in office. We have a diverse and vibrant community and we need a clear direction as well as new leadership to ensure a
bright future,” Tunstall said.”
Good luck Mr. Tunstall, Council-member Gary and Mr. Maroulis. We’re sure of your intentions!
I think Mr. Tunstall’s release addresses well the shenanigans we often see in our local county, city and school district elections. I especially like these two links. I believe he will make a fine representative to the people.

Obviously he has been involved in the community at the grass-roots level unlike his opponent and knows the issues and hasn’t sold out his neighbors to the special interest.
Readers, please read my posts from the beginning of this thread.
I read the articles opposition cited in this thread. Nothing in the articles infers anything negative re Owen. Owen does not use me…I would not allow myself to be used in politics. I may be friendly, but I’m no fool and I’m no pawn and I refuse to compromise my principles or beliefs…ask anyone who knows me well how many times I have had to say no.
Factually, truthseeker, all
I think the quote from this recent media report in FBN makes the current budget situation under the current mayor very clear. A good PR department, paid for by the taxpayers, can only go so far when e-mails like this are exposed
“A recent confidential e-mail from City Manager Frank Simpson to all city employees paints a dire picture of the city’s budget and warns of a moratorium on all travel and the unlikelihood of raises in 2010.
The e-mail, sent by Simpson last week, told employees …during the current economic climate, the city is starting to see greater negative impacts on the city’s budget then were projected last year.
According to Simpson, city revenues are lower than expected and expenditures are greater than anticipated. Simpson asked all employees to reduce any discretionary spending that does not affect city service. He said that all departments will soon undergo a review of “service delivery” to identify the core service provided by each department.” FortBendNow
This pretty much says it all. It is time for new leadership and not the borrow, tax and spender bunch…

MoCity,
Congratulations for capturing the essence of the discussion for the rest of us to comprehend. You succeed at the art of “tongue-cheek” as well. I love it!!!!
Mary, it is painful to me personally to see a woman being used by Owen like his personal toilet paper. I don’t care if you use your own name or an invented name; you are still being “used” by an abusive public parasite. Evaluate what you are doing, if not for yourself, certainly for your community.
Reasons given apply because they stem from the truth of Owens record for the last 16 years…Go figure … Change would be a gift to Missouri City residents.
Gary’s record is quite impressive !
I just wonder why Allen keeps pushing the property taxes up and didn’t revoke the homeowners exemption except for those under 65. Could it be because he is that age himself. Maybe it’s time he is retired with Jerry!
Go Gary!!!
Owen is guilty for the whole Country Club deal that has increased taxes for the whole city. There is no way he can escape that blame… NONE
Mayor Owens is an immensely popular mayor and could easily top the 80% vote mandate he got two years ago….Way To Go Owen!
Owen has lost his base of supporters…They figured out how much he LIES !!! GO GARY…. A mayor with Integrity/// A Mayor for ALL people
That’s funny he he didn’t get anywhere near 80% of the vote and only won 2 precincts in one neighborhood. Better do a fact check when this guy posts.
Now I think Anthony summarized the problems under Owen’s leadership the best:
“According to Maroulis, it is important now, more than ever, to MOve MO. City forward.
“Missouri City has so much potential. We have an amazing police force and our fire department is first class. But listening to the residents and businesses that I have talked to they are frustrated and they feel they are not getting back what they are putting in. We need to dig into this.
“We are city without a hospital, a movie theatre, a community pool. We call ourselves the ‘Show Me City’ but many feel it is the ‘Owe Me’ city.
“If elected I will be receptive to community concerns & citizen input. I will work to seek solutions. I will dedicate my efforts to making the city council more reflective of the concerns of the community,” Maroulis said.” Fort Bend Sun
Good luck to Anthony, Gary and Tunstall and all other challengers too! It is time for a broom to sweep out the cob-webs.
Wow…what a refreshing moment in MC 50 years history:

I’m a volunteer and I don’t ‘spin’. Anonymous pseudonyms that accuse me of such should prove it. Please provide proof of my non-existent ‘spin’.
I’m not sure who you are talking to, because no one I have read in here is responding directly to you? Now go back to your campaign work and stop the free advertising. You are backing the wrong people again as usual and it IS hypocritical for you to be cheering for a candidate who pushes for higher property taxes while you don’t pay them or vote in that election.
Just read my posts from the beginning of the thread, readers (in re to southerncomfort’s reply above).
What is your point MC then. It looks to me like a summary of what has been going on. You already said you voted for Owen the last time around. Is this a back-handed slap?
What I see is a number of good questions being posted that the reading public has every right to read. Every time this other poster brings up a circular issue which she has brought up numerous times in the past and already knows the answers for but continues to do it ad infinitum. When her position is exposed or answered she continues to throw out one liner red herrings and does so from a distance without responding to the valid rebuttals. Very disingenuous!
Also the hypocrisy should be clearly pointed out when someone is not paying property taxes but supporting the candidates who have repeatedly raised them and oppose appraisal caps and rate caps reform efforts. Owen is NO conservative, nor should anyone be fooled into thinking he is.
I live in an outlying area which will become part of Missouri City. I do not know who wrote the last post or what they are referring to. I again urge readers to read my posts from the beginning. I repeat myself due to the fact not everyone scrolls down.
I agree, read the posts from the beginning and realize you have a campaign worker in here spinning for her candidate, nothing more. Then check the campaign finance reports of this candidate and see where the bulk of his funding has always come from and the inherent conflicts of interest tied to voting on projects for company owners and their vendors when city projects and tax dollars are at stake.
Some elected officials don’t know the meaning of recusal.
Uh-huh.
The 3:49 post by MoCity that is…some more posts recently appeared in-between.
If you have read any of my previous posts from the last year, you all know I am not the biggest fan of Mayor Owen. You also know that Ms. McClure and I have had a few, rather unprofessional ‘discussions’ in the past… including one ‘back n’ forth’ that resulted in the termination of this discussion board for a few weeks.
With all of that said, Ms. McClure has been rather honest about the fact that she doesn’t live or vote in Missouri City or Missouri City elections. The fact has already been established ad nauseam, which means it is time to move on. We all get it – she doesn’t live here.
The fact that the QVCC case is still open (as previously mentioned) has nothing to do with the Mayor and everything to do with the former club owners and the court system. The Mayor cannot control how quickly the court system moves, nor can he control the fact that the club owners continue to stall. It is what it is. The fact that it is in the court system at all, is at the feet of the Mayor and council members on the council at the time of the eminent domain. However, the speed at which it is moving is out of the hands of the Mayor.
The fact that the City (Mayor and Councilwoman included) unanimously voted to remove the Homestead Exemption from the ballot means only one thing – you won’t be getting the (albeit small) additional exemption. Whether the Mayor wanted to remove it from the ballot because he didn’t (at the time) have Mayoral competition does not matter – it was removed by a 7-0 vote by all members.
Again, I am not saying that Mayor Owen shouldn’t be replaced – far from it. But I am saying that the reasons some of you are giving aren’t applicable to the situation.
‘Tied at the hip’ and endorsing can mean different things. I urge readers to read all my posts in this thread from the beginning.
Truthseeker- I noticed someone is now implying that Healey is not backed or endorsed officially by Owen, that’s funny because they made it very evident in the media reports. Funny what some will do to obfuscate the facts.
Everyone get out and vote in the run-off election and do your best to support current judge and qualified candidate Nina Schaefer….
http://www.ethics.state.tx.us/sworncomp/2007/270333.pdf
Funny how birds of a feather seem to flock together, isn’t it TS?
How are they tied at the hip? What is the ‘special interest agenda’? Please explain and give concrete examples with viable references and name any sources please.
I could not agree more. Schaefer is a much better choice than Healey. Both, Owen and Healey have a special interest agenda.
Let’s hope everyone doesn’t forget the run-off elections and the fact that Healey & Owen are pretty much tied at the hip this election cycle. A new broom would do wonders at the county level beginning April 5th with early voting and April 13th election day.
Schaefer will make a wonderful new DA and she doesn’t have all this special interest baggage, besides a majority voted against the incumbent in March. It is time.
I’m a certified paralegal and have much legal experience. Please provide proof for serious allegations you make. Anyone can hurl a false allegation behind a pseudonym…but does that mean anything? When you refer to things you have read, please provide links.
Also, a quick P.S. I have also volunteered in community churches and in the schools in addition to the other volunteer work I mentioned.
Right again Mary, the immensely popular Mayor of MC winning 80% of the votes and a mandate in ’08 seem to infuriate some malcontents.
How do you feel about the information coming out about Owen and his clone Danny regarding his business problems and the fact that he has close ties with the regime that hurt his family? I’ve also read numerous reports on how quite a few of his former friends and supporters are now supporting other candidates in the race.
PS You need to check the county records on your numbers. They are quite inflated and Owen is a new candidate this time around. One who has been on council and served the city well and isn’t a “machine lackey”.
Truthseeker,
Someone needs proof again about the mayors duplicity. Let’s see, how’s this quote from just one of many news sources taken from city council,
“..Missouri City then made an agreement with BFI not to oppose the expansion if BFI’s garbage trucks would continue using Hwy. 6 and other major highways and not go through its neighborhoods and BFI has to contribute $200,000 to Missouri City..” FB Star
If the cheerleader needs more I can pull up volumes on this guy. He’s “a piece of work”. lol
ANYONE BUT OWEN!! Absolutely anyone, but Owen!!!
Hi Patriot,
Apparently forgot to add these links last night for the cheerleader:

Enough said again…
Oh well, these reminders get tiresome but some have to have them. BTW, I’m with you on the cronies. It is time for it to end. What do they say when you smoke out
Well, truth is truth; and if it happens to be posted by one who uses a pseudonym, then so be it. I think most of us have minds of our own and do not need influencing to discount anyone who happens to use a pseudonym. On the other hand, if one happens to use his/her name when posting, that’s a preferred option, however, it is also a preferred option to post using a pseudonym.
But, depending on the sensibility and logic of the posting, it does not necessary make one who may use his/her own name when posting any more believable than one who prefers to post using a pseudonym.
Truthseeker, I seem to remember reading a chronicle story about him denying the Christus Hospital was cancelled right before his 2006 re-election. I believe that one can still be searched and found easily. I also remember reading something of a denial by city officials regarding another fire station in the ETJ that was promised and agreed to by the city at 3000 homes with a certain developer that still doesn’t exist at 5000+ homes. I think that one can be searched easily too and I seem to remember initial denials regarding ‘tipping fees’ and the proposed near 20 story expansion of the Blue Ridge Landfill at Missouri Cities back door. I also seem to recall him denying, on the record, that all those campaign contributions he took over the years from those development company owners did not influence his decision when voting on their projects.
How’s all those for memory joggers? Oh well truthseeker, some just never learn. What’s that old saying about horses…..I think that applies in this thread. Keep up the good work and keep pointing out the duplicity that is the norm in fort bend county politics and MC!
Do readers really believe a cheerleader that does not reside in Missouri City but just so happens to show up every election year on Fortbendnow to cheer and flip for Owen.
What a FLIP FLOP !
Cheerleader the proof is in the pudding.
Go Gary!!!!!
Perhaps the QVCC deal might ring your bell! Why has that case not closed yet? Why are we continuing to pour more and more taxpayer dollars in that deal? Where are the city profits from it? Is it REALLY for the whole city or just for his buddies?
With what we paid for that country club we could have AFFORDED to have many more police officers on our voted safest city streets and still gave the taxpayers a HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION they deserve, right?
In other words Owen cheerleader please tell us what he has not lied about.
Keep lying every year around election time about revitalization of the Texas Parkway area. We still havent seen anything done yet and we never will as long as Owen is mayor. Stop throwing bones to taxpaying residents of Missouri City. You even have Big Ruben lying about revitalization for a little under the table change.
Vote for dignity
Vote Cynthia Lenton Gary for Mayor
Please tell us what he has lied about and show concrete proof thereof.
Owen has shown to be nothing more than a liar. He fights to stay on council not for the people but for his own personal finances with the special interest.
I’m a volunteer (not a paid worker) who was asked to volunteer. I reiterate, I’ve volunteered all my time for the community, health charities, animal welfare, and local politics. I live in an outlying area that is planned to become part of Missouri City eventually. I spend much time in Missouri City with my family and I love and care about many who do live in Missouri City. I pay sales tax by supporting Missouri City businesses as much as possible. I have every right to volunteer and am breaking no ‘rule’ by doing so.
Do readers tend to believe one who posts with their real name or one who posts with a pseudonym(s)?
Are you now going to deny you do not live, vote or pay property taxes in MC and are a campaign worker for the special interest mayor???
Are you now going to deny that you have admitted to being a campaign worker for Allen Owen and that you do not live, vote or pay property taxes in the city? It seems just a tad hypocritical to be pushing a candidate who raises OTHER peoples taxes rather than the fiscally responsible and prudent one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psvAx7aCxgI
Go Anthony, Gary & Tunstall…..independent and respected community leaders who have earned their stripes. Not special interest toadies!

Perhaps that is why the City continues to grow as quickly as they are. The fact a certain activist continues to try to undermine this City and does not even live in Missouri City is amazing.
Actually the police and fire coverage was an excuse to place it on the ballot last month and then remove it a month later, she only voted on the agenda that was introduced by Owen. She has said she support a homeowners exemption and she is the only one who has voted against 2 of the 3 last Owen special interest lead tax increases.
She won her last contest city race by 63% of the vote. Those wanting facts and not spin just see:
Besides the mayor has had over 25 years to improve city police and fire services. Check the current ISO rating of the fire dept and ask why only 3 ride on most city fire trucks and why that hurts the cities insurance rating and costs all homeowners more. Also ask why the poster above does not pay property taxes in the city yet supports the candidate that opposes appraisal and rate caps and pushed the last 3 city property tax increases and record debt?
More to come…..Gary is very much involved in revitalizing existing areas of Missouri City (the areas that pay the bulk of the taxes) as well as supports new growth. She has helped bring millions over the last 3-4 years into the city and voted to support numerous positive programs.
It’s time for a real-independent mayor for MC, one that is not in bed with the special interest and can say NO when it is needed. If Owen was serious about improving police and fire he would have mentioned that the city fell on the CQ publication of safe cities from 22 last year to 48 this year and they field about half as many police officers as Sugar Land their neighbor.
And she will represent you the voter and NOT the special interest feeding off your tax dollars!
With a dozen or so of the major Houston developers on his campaign finance reports he certainly does take orders well. Just ask him about the TIRZ they set up for them in prime commercial property off hwy 6 diverting tax dollars and the 600K land deal he gave to another.
Wake up Missouri City, you have a clear choice for experience.
