Former Sugar Land Police Chief Lisa Womack Forced Out As Chief of Chicago-Area Police Department

Former Sugar Land Police Chief Lisa Womack has been forced out as police chief of a fast-growing Chicago-area suburb.

Womack officially resigned late Thursday afternoon after being placed on administrative leave March 10 by the Elgin, IL, city council.

She had been given 21 days to accept a buyout offer from the city and resign or face termination.

The move came following a closed-door session of the city council during which council members discussed Womack’s performance. City officials have refused to comment on the reason for the action against Womack, saying it was a “personnel issue.”

By law, Womack still has seven days to change her mind after signing the severance agreement.

Under terms of the city’s buyout offer, Womack will receive $75,343.58, which represents six months of her current $150,678 annual salary. She will also receive $6,668 for unused leave and medical insurance coverage through Sept. 30.

In exchange, Womack gives up the right to sue the city.

Womack has not commented publicly on the situation. Sources in Elgin say she put her home up for sale March 20

Womack became Elgin’s first female police chief in 2005. She commanded a 180-member department

Elgin has a population of approximately 104,000 and is located on the northwest side of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is one of the fastest growing cities in Illinois, according to state development officials.

Womack began her law enforcement career with the Arlington, Tex., Police Department in 1992 and rose through the ranks to become a deputy chief.

She was hired as Sugar Land’s police chief in 2004 and left the following year to become chief in Elgin.

Womack has also been serving as a commissioner for the Commission for Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, a national accreditation and credentialing organization.

The same thing that should have happened to her in Sugar Land, they ran her off. She wasn’t liked by the officers and they were glad to see her go.
