Mini Mathletes is a series of activities for fourth and fifth grade students interested in sharpening their quick thinking and problem solving skills. The students competed in a basic skills test by grade and two tests of their choice from the following categories: Trivia, Calculator, Challenge, Speed and TAKS test.
Awards were given to the top nine finalists in the seven areas with one overall top student. The Top Student Award for this year went to WSE student Nathan Z. He placed first in the Speed test, second in Calculator and overall Fifth Grade tests.
WSE also swept the top three spots in both the Fourth and Fifth Grade tests.
“Your students are awesome and we loved spending the day with them,” said Teresa Baevich, one of the Mu Alpha Theta sponsors.
She said she hoped that elementary students who attended would leave the contest with a heightened appreciation for math and be inspired to join MathCounts in middle school. MathCounts supports efforts to help U.S. middle school students develop strong mathematical abilities and critical thinking skills.
Walker Station Principal Ginger Carrabine said that everyone at WSE is “extremely proud” of the students.
