Recently winners of the middle school category of the 2010 Fort Bend Poet Laureate Competition recently read their winning poems at Mugs Coffee Bar located on FM 359 in Pecan Grove, just outside of Richmond.

Winners in the 2010 Fort Bend County Poet Laureate Competition, middle school category were, left to right, Sadie Thompson, Makayla Slater, Jacquelyn Montemayor, Teya Kelley, Caleb Parker, Kristi Person (teacher), Usman Baig, David Lai, Andriana Falafivka and Trenten Williams.
Jacquelyn Montemayor was named by the competition’s judges as the first middle school Poet Laureate of Fort Bend County for her poem, “Townewest.”
There was a tie for second place between Makayla Slater and Ralph Hudenical. Third place was awarded to Teya Kelley. Honorable mentions were awarded to Trenten Williams, Sadie Thompson, Qasim Adenwalla, Brianna O’Connor, David Lai, Caleb Parker, Andriana Falafivka, and Usman Baig.
All of the winners attend Sugar Land Middle School in the Fort Bend Independent School District and are students of Kristi Person.
The judges of the competition said the were “impressed by the skill and maturity” of the children’s poems.
The winner of the adult competition was Yolanda Wilson, who was named Fort Bend County’s first ever Poet Laureate.
The Fort Bend Poets Group (FBPG) conducted the competition. The FBPG promotes the art of poetry in Fort Bend County and meets at 10 a.m. on the last Saturday of each month for poetry readings by local poets. More information is available at www.fortbendpoets.org or e-mail fortbendpoets@ymail.com.
