Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for people who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations.
Here are some current needs:
Medical personnel needed
Family practitioners, nurse practitioners, RNs, LVNs, medical assistants, certified nurse assistants, phlebotomists, and physician assistants are needed at a free medical clinic for low-income residents of Fort Bend County. Weekly or biweekly three-hour shifts are available Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at a social service organization’s Stafford headquarters.
Train a guide dog
Raise a puppy for an organization that assigns guide dogs to visually impaired people. In-depth training will equip you to care for and teach a puppy that will eventually become a companion to someone in need of the dog’s services. This assignment calls for responsible volunteers willing to integrate the dog thoroughly into their family lives and daily routines. The duration of commitment varies but is typically in the range of 12 to 18 months.
Under your wing
Baby birds will be your focus when you volunteer in the avian section of a wildlife rehabilitation center near Hammerly and Beltway 8. Staff there will be happy to teach you all you need to know about the care and feeding of these feathered friends to enable you to nurse them to good health. Duty shifts are generally available during the daytime on weekdays and weekends year-round. (During the summer, evening shifts are also available.) The minimum age to volunteer on your own is 18, however, young people ages 12 to 17 are welcome if accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Additional opportunities:
- Connect with a homebound senior through friendly phone calls.
- Help a local housing program in Stafford with data entry and word processing.
- Help a wildlife shelter in southwest Houston answer an information hotline or assist with miscellaneous office functions.
- Help with receptionist duties, phone coverage, photocopying, and filing at a women’s shelter in Rosenberg.
- Lead arts and crafts activities for seniors at a health-care facility in Sugar Land.
- Make friendly visits to a resident of a 24-hour care facility in Richmond for persons with mental disabilities.
