Richmond Police To Issue ‘Information Tickets’ In Effort To Decrease Car Burglaries

Richmond residents may soon find a ticket on their windshield – one that carries no fine, but will grade the resident on how burglar-proof they left their vehicle.

The Richmond Police Department has started the “Safe Vehicle Program” in an effort to curtail car burglaries in the city and the educate residents on ways to reduce their risk of being victimized.

Officers from the Richmond Police Department will be walking through parking lots of local business and apartment complexes placing the “information tickets” on vehicles letting residents know if their vehicle was left unlocked or if items of value were visible in the parked vehicle.

According to police, a vehicle can be burglarized in fewer than two minutes and crime reports have shown that the first thing criminals look for in motor vehicle thefts is an unlocked door.

Officers will be placing the notices on all vehicles, even if nothing appears to be unsafe.  In this case the owner of the vehicle would see a box checked which advises them that their vehicle was checked but everything was okay.

It’s an excuse to go around looking in peoples’ cars. We aren’t fooled.
