Deputy Scheduled For Surgery After Bank Robbery Suspect Opens Fire With AK-47 Assault Rifle

A Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office deputy is scheduled for surgery today after a bank robbery suspects opened fire with an AK-47 assault rifle on officers while fleeing the scene Saturday morning.

 A woman with her two children in her car was hit by a stray bullet while driving by the chase, and is in good condition after surgery, according to reports.

The suspects were attempting to evade deputies after allegedly robbing the Bank of America on Highway 99 and River Falls. Deputy Charles Scott caught up to the getaway van near West Airport just east of Hwy. 99, and 26-year-old Mouafak Kazzaz opened the back doors of the van and began shooting at Scott.

Scott was hit twice in the wrist and a bullet grazed his head. He was taken by helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital, but not before he reported his injury and identifying the location of the suspects.

Additional deputies eventually cornered the getaway van at a dead end of West Bellfort and Dargail, and a shootout ensued which ended in the death of Kazzaz. Deputy Courtney Bank was injured by glass from a shattered windshield.

The driver of the van, 25-year-old Larryl Williams was taken into custody and is being held on a $1 million bond.
