Rosenberg Urging Community To Support Veterans This Memorial Day Weekend

The City of Rosenberg has proclaimed May 28 and May 29 as “Buddy Poppy Days,” recognizing the merits of the 88 year-long Veterans of Foreign Wars program and urging the community support this initiative and honor the nation’s veterans.

Rosenberg VFW Post #3903 Commander, Joe Bryan, and his sister, VFW Auxiliary Fundraiser Chairman Kathy Bryan, accepting the proclamation from Mayor Joe M. Gurecky.

The red poppy is the official memorial flower of the VFW. In the city’s proclamation, Mayor Joe M. Gurecky urged “all patriotic citizens to wear a Buddy Poppy as mute evidence of our gratitude and support of the men and women of this country who have risked their lives in defense of the freedoms which we hold dear as American citizens”.

Every year near the Memorial Day holiday, VFW members distribute millions of bright red poppies assembled by disabled veterans in exchange for donations.  The funds raised through this initiative help maintain state and national veterans’ rehabilitation and service programs.
