Sugar Land To Hold Memorial Day Ceremony

 Sugar Land city offices will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day, but trash collection will take place as usual. The city will hold Memorial Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. at Sugar Land Memorial Park, 15300 University Blvd., will honor members of the U.S. Armed Forces.

The event — organized by the City of Sugar Land — will include a presentation of colors, tributes from members of the community, a short essay reading from local students, words of remembrance from local veterans, and choral and patriotic musical selections.

Educational and commemorative activities throughout the park will allow families an opportunity to view several military displays, including artifacts and vehicles.

Houston Marine Moms will host a donation and care package booth supporting men and women serving overseas. Community members are asked to submit non-perishable items such as tuna/chicken packets, white crew socks, granola/power bars, hand sanitizer, sunscreen and beef jerky.

The city will provide pre-paid post cards for those who want to send messages of gratitude to U.S. Armed Forces members stationed throughout the world.

For those who haven’t experienced Maya Lin’s Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial in Washington, D.C., the half scale-replica, will be displayed at Memorial Park from Friday-Monday, May 28 through May 31, from 8 a.m.- 8 p.m.

The exhibition is organized by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, the organization charged with preserving The Wall and the memory of the more than 58,000 men and women whose lives were lost in service to their country. The Wall That Heals has been displayed in more than 300 cities and towns throughout the nation, spreading the Memorial’s healing legacy to millions.
