Volunteers Needed To Help Victims Of Domestic Abuse, Train Guide Dogs

Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for people who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations.

Here are some current needs:

Advocate for victims of abuse

Be an advocate for women victimized by domestic abuse.  Volunteering with an organization that works to prevent violence against Asian women, you’ll help heal the hurt of past abuse and foster healthier interaction among family members in the future.  A comprehensive 40-hour training program will equip you to handle calls from your home, providing peer counseling when appropriate and referring women on to other needed services.    Knowledge of an Asian language is helpful but not required.

Train a guide dog

Raise a puppy for an organization that assigns guide dogs to visually impaired people. In-depth training will equip you to care for and teach a puppy that will eventually become a companion to someone in need of the dog’s services.  This assignment calls for responsible volunteers willing to integrate the dog thoroughly into their family lives and daily routines.  The duration of commitment varies but is typically in the range of 12 to 18 months.

Volunteer “side walkers”

Fun and fresh air are in store for volunteers participating in a therapeutic horseback-riding program for children and adults with disabilities.  Based at stables in Fort Bend, the program uses volunteers to accompany these folks while they enjoy the unique thrill of a quiet horseback stroll in a protected environment. Register today for training in August. This upbeat assignment will be available on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Volunteers as young as 14 are invited to participate.
