Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for people who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations.
Here are some current needs:
Children First
Protect and defend the rights and well being of child abuse victims. An agency based in Fort Bend County that works directly with the courts has many key volunteer assignments available. Some volunteers research placements for children who have been removed from their homes; others review foster care cases and make recommendations for permanent placement; still others work with families in which abuse
Create lifelong memories
Become a mentor to a boy or girl from a single-parent home. Getting together twice a month at mutually convenient times with a youngster between the ages of 6 and 15, the two of you can enjoy recreational activities or simply discuss his or her problems and aspirations. The sponsoring agency will provide you with training and ongoing support. This assignment requires a valid driver’s license and background check. The minimum age for volunteers is 18.
Teach arts and crafts
Artists and art assistants are invited to share their time and talent with over 45 children at a Burmese Resettlement Program in Southwest Houston. If you are gifted in art, dance, music, drama or storytelling consider spending a little time once a week to help kids express emotions in a healthy manner and realize that learning can be fun. The application process includes a background check.
Additional opportunities:
- Assist a Fort Bend school district with cleaning, sorting, and folding clothing to be distributed to needy children.
- Be a bingo caller and bring cheer and good fellowship to residents of a healthcare center in Missouri City.
- Distribute flyers to the Fort Bend community on behalf of an agency that serves Asian women victimized by domestic abuse.
- Feed baby birds and help nurse them back to good health at a wildlife rehabilitation center in southwest Houston.
- Help seniors maintain their independence by becoming a casework aide with a new initiative launched by a local United Way agency.
- Help with receptionist duties, phone coverage, photocopying, and filing at a women’s shelter in Rosenberg.
