Mercer Stadium Damaged In Monday Night’s Storm

Fort Bend Independent School District officials are still determining the amount it will cost to repair Mercer Stadium, which was damaged during Monday night’s severe thunderstorm that knocked out power for more than 25,000 Fort Bend residents.

According to district officials, there is no interior damage to Mercer Stadium located at 16403 Lexington Blvd. in Sugar Land, but the exterior wall of the press box almost completely collapsed.

According to district officials, there is no interior damage to the stadium located at 16403 Lexington Blvd. in Sugar Land, but the exterior wall of the press box almost completely collapsed.

The storm, which hit the area in the early evening hours, knocked down tree limbs and electricity poles across the county, with the Richmond/Rosenberg area suffering the most damage.

The City of Sugar Land released earlier this week a plan to collect storm debris, and said neighborhoods south of U.S. 59 experienced the most damage.

The city’s solid waste contractor will collect debris on regular collection days and provide special green waste collections on Wednesday, Aug. 25 and Wednesday, Sept. 1.

The green waste collection will utilize special equipment to collect heavy items, such as tree stumps and large limbs.  The green waste collected on Wednesdays will be taken to the composting facility and recycled into mulch or compost.

Residents should place debris on the curb for collection on regular service days or on Wednesday, and are encouraged to cut brush and tree limbs to a length of 4 feet, if possible.
