New Territory Resident Celebrating Her Birthday By Raising Money For Breast Cancer Research

The 7th annual Janet Ely Tennis Invitational Breast Cancer Fundraiser is scheduled from 5-10 p.m. Oct. 16 at The Club at New Territory, 1200 Walker School Road. Ely, a 50-year old New Territory resident, has been celebrating her birthday for the past six years by inviting her tennis buddies to play in a round robin doubles tennis tournament held during the month of October, which also coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In August, Ely was diagnosed with stage 4 breat cancer after being cancer-free for eight years. Over the years, Ely has raised through her tennis tournaments and other functions more than $100,000 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation-Houston Affiliate.

The tennis and poker tourney is an evening affair with live and silent auction items, raffles, prizes and dinner.

“It’s the best way I know how to raise money and to be assured a great time while celebrating another year of life,” said Ely.

Good for her, having a positive effect on others.

Service work is down in America, more of us could follow her lead.
