Volunteers Needed To Brighten The Lives Of Seniors, Referee Youth Basketball

Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for people who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations.

Here are some current needs:

Brighten the lives of seniors

Delight homebound senior citizens with hot lunchtime meals and some friendly conversation.  As a meal delivery volunteer for a United Way agency in Fort Bend County, you’ll be helping low-income seniors remain independent while providing them with much-needed human contact.  You’ll pick up the lunches at a designated site near you on your choice of weekdays and deliver them to shut-in seniors in the general area.

Cover the courts

Be a volunteer referee for a youth basketball league’s games at a Sugar Land recreation center. League games will be held on Saturdays between 8 a.m. and 4:40 p.m., with each game lasting about an hour.  If you can referee one to three games on one or more Saturdays, you’ll be helping youngsters in grade levels K through 9 enjoy healthful competition and learn the basics of good sportsmanship. Training will be provided.

Medical personnel needed

Family practitioners, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants are needed at a free medical clinic for low-income residents of Fort Bend County.

Flexible volunteer shifts are available, Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at a social service organization’s Stafford headquarters.

Additional opportunities:

  • Connect with a homebound senior through friendly phone calls.
  • Groom, walk, and play with dogs and cats awaiting adoption at an animal shelter in Rosenberg.
  • Help a new community center in Richmond open its doors and meet the needs of low income residents by answering phones, scheduling volunteers or assisting with the set-up of a corner market.
  • Help with receptionist duties, phone coverage, photocopying and filing for a senior home repair program in Missouri City.
  • History and heritage will come alive when you don a period costume and help visitors travel back in time at Richmond’s famous George Ranch.
  • Visit various Fort Bend high schools to speak with students about teen dating violence and creating healthy relationships.
