Zulma De Leon has been named the Fort Bend Independent School District’s Bilingual Teacher of the Year, Yamei Zhong, as English as a Second Language Elementary Teacher of the Year and Mary Annabella Alegria as ESL Secondary Teacher of the Year.
De Leon is a fourth-grade bilingual teacher at Fleming Elementary School. She feels that “each of her students is placed in her care for a specific reason.”
Zhong, an ESL teacher at Oakland Elementary School, says her goal as a teacher is to motivate her students to embrace their new language and culture as she did when arriving to the U.S. from China.
Alegria is an ESL teacher at Kempner High School. A veteran educator of 14 years, she began her career as a foreign language teacher but was soon drawn to English language learners. She said she finds the challenge of teaching students to acquire a new language in a short period of time “fascinating.”
All three will go on to compete in the Houston Area Association for Bilingual Education Teacher of the Year program.

What does this mean? This article is about TEACHERS of the year? Do you have a personal beef with Dr. Bob or something? Please try and stay on topic at least once in awhile VP.
Congratulations to Ms. De Leon – we need lots of teachers like her in our district with our ever-changing diversity. Thanks for all that you, and all of our teachers, do for our kids!
Why do you always jump on view? If you don’t like what he is posting then just ignore him.
Simple: anyone who posts whatever strikes them without regard to the topic of the story or discussion makes them no different than a spammer. No, they’re not a selling a product or service for profit in this case, but when they are hard to ignore when in the midst of almost every story and conversation/discussion you seem them post something from completely irrelevant to mildly discernible to the actual topic. That’s the only problem I have – not with their personal views, but forcing us to wade through them constantly whether on-topic or not.
