Position 5 Candidate Jonita Reynolds Says Residents Want New Leadership On FBISD Board

Fort Bend Independent School District Board of Trustees Position 5 candidate Jonita Reynolds said she decided to run for the board after hearing residents express a desire “for new leadership.”

Reynolds is running for the seat currently held by Laurie Caldwell, who is not seeking re-election. She will face Patsy Taylor on the ballot.

Early voting begins May 2 and ends May 10. Election day is May 14, 2011.

“In the wake of assisting my husband, State Representative Ron Reynolds, in his bid for the Fort Bend County House District 27 seat, I met numerous residents who expressed concerns and a desire for new leadership on the Board,” said Reynolds.  “They wanted leaders who were cognizant of the needs of all stakeholders, not just a few.  After thoughtful consideration, I made the decision to run for the position of Board of Trustees for Position 5 in 2008 and, again, in 2011.”

Reynolds calls serving as an FBISD trustee an “awesome responsibility.”

“As a responsible trustee, I would be cognizant of the fact that the seven trustees elected must represent all of Fort Bend ISD, which spans 170 square miles,” said Reynolds. “Although my husband and I reside in Sienna Plantation, the mere geography of our residence does not demarcate the depth and breadth of my proficiency and my passion for making a difference in support of the vision. Should I be elected Fort Bend ISD Trustee, I would welcome the opportunity to ensure we prepare all students to meet the intellectual demands of the modern workplace and a complex global society.”

Reynolds said as a trustee she would advocate for educational excellence for all students, work with all stakeholders to assure high-quality schools, be a fiscal steward of taxpayers’ dollars and enhance public support and confidence in Fort Bend ISD.

Reynolds is currently the chief executive officer of Gulf Coast Community Services Association, a nonprofit corporation.

Reynolds is the former Houston Independent School District director of strategic management and quality improvement; an experienced trainer who has administered management courses for principals and school business managers; is a former HISD high school magnet coordinator and high school English teacher; was a State Board of Education Mid-Management Administration/PK-12 coordinator; and she holds several Texas teacher certifications.

Reynolds has received the American Red Cross Humanitarian Award and is a Mayor’s Leader in Literacy Award recipient; was a commencement/promotion speaker at more than 25 schools throughout Texas; a member of the Bay Ridge Christian College and Texas Association of Community Action Agencies Board of Trustees; a member of American Leadership Forum, Fort Bend NAACP, Missouri City Links, and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; and also is involved with Scanlan Oaks Campus Based Leadership, Lake Olympia’s Missy-C workshops, Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce Education Committee and Fort Bend Pastors Association.

Reynolds graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Houston, and received Master’s and Doctorate Degrees in Education.

In my humble opinion, Viewpoint (Mr. Rodrigo Carreon) found some not in agreement with the disrespectful comments he lodged against the NAACP. I for one was surprised. Such lack of respect seems uncharacteristic for Viewpoint (Mr. Rodrigo Carreon). I’m usually on his side–but, not, this time.

    • FCCresident says:

I think you are misreading him factually. I believe he is criticizing the prior leadership and their lack of involvement, not the organization. Naturally many organization that were once very active are no longer. I often think of how that famous retired group org has virtually gone into the insurance sales bus. After witnessing the involvement of Mr. Carreon, if that is indeed who viewpoint is, I believe the man is above reproach and always giving his best, unlike many of our local political wannabees and opportunist.

“mores” sounds like a bully to be attacking someone who has been involved in the community as much as carreon. Since Dr. Taylor appears in the LCSW listings as a Dr., I can only suggest people search the state site before defaming further and confirm for themselves or call the good doctor and ask her at281-710-4032. Whomever posted the spurious logic rant regarding the district PR releases must be lite up top too. Since when his a press release from a PR hack considered “fact”….next this discussion is just down right lame since Dr. Taylor is apparently running a ghost campaign and IMO doing so probably at the request of the other challenger campaign. We’ve seen this in the past with Mr. Menendez in his first run, simply leaving his name on the ballot (he received over 500 votes just for that)….so what is anyone worried about. Reynolds losing an uncontested race? How funny.

Can’t you find something better to do with your time than playing guess who is posting and attacking good people that get involved like Carreon? Go for a walk and enjoy the day folks…

    • Devastating Diva says:

Why should anyone call her? <–rhetorical question

It is obvious that she doesn't care! I highly doubt that she is concerned about whether people believe that she has a doctorate or not.

No need to disrespect the candidates or the NAACP. In the final analysis, casting your vote for one candidate or another is freedom of choice. Whatever candidate you choose to vote for, make your selection and then, do so accordingly.

Life has taught the lesson for me in that we all are involved in politics one way or another whether we recognize it or not. We may be the link connecting the sphere of influence for someone desiring to pursue a political ambition, even, as an unsuspecting nonpaid linkage. Even though, you, the individual may be of no particular importance as “in being in the know” or having distinction of title or married to anyone who has distinction of title.

In fact, you may be non-descript and unassuming, but, perhaps, you may be in a sphere of influence of someone who has the distinction of being powerful or perceived to be powerful by name identification and /or of title of distinction ——-don’t rule out others realizing that although “you” may not be of any particular distinction; but “you” may be in sphere of influence of someone who does have distinction and power.

The reason I know this to be true so very well is because once upon a time, due to having an undignified, unfair situation perpetrated against one of my children, high school aged, I had reason to interact with David Collins, a former FBISD School Board member, at that time. Someone, at that time, who was a friend of mine in a very natural, uncontrived manner, though the commonality of both of our young elementary aged children being in the same grade at the same school and though actualizing our doting parent roles in commonality of purpose as room parents, we became friends.

Anyway, this individual shall remain nameless requested me to set up a lunch date so that the requestee could be introduced to David Collins. I, not being a political type or even sensing political maneuvers in the making, agreed to be the link of introduction. Well, much to my surprise and, even, year later, in reflective surprise that a chance introduction led to the requestee being mentored by David Collins and, thus, the mentee became a board member of prominences for many years and the rest is history.

In my ponderings of thought, just because I was/remain a strong advocate for my children, I interacted with a power through necessity, and although not political or name distinctive or married to name distinctive, I became a conduit to the launching of a political actualization.

Actually, my belief is that my, particular, distinction is the willingness to act courageously to protect me and mine which puts me in situations, often, whereby I interact with the powerful and names of distinctions in a David v Goliath scenario. Plus my father was military and we traveled the world and I believed in America so fervently, and so when faced with American not living up to its creed, I fought and still fight against that injustice. To that end, even though I’m not a fan of or hold political views of agreement with Kay Bailey Hutchison. However, I do agree with her when her stated sentiments: Kay Bailey Hutchison says, “My daddy taught me not to go around picking fights; but, if forced to fight; fight to win.”

Long story, short; I served as a political linchpin in a very casual, naïve, unassuming way because someone else saw an opening of a window of opportunity to make a political connection through me. Don’t ever underestimate the power of politics; it is happening all around you, even, if you think you are not political or not involved in politics; others my see windows of opportunity to make their connections through you. My point is as stated previously, we are all in politics whether we know it or not and whether paid or unpaid, any one of us knowingly or unknowingly; willingly or unwillingly may become a conduit which provides a sphere of influence impacting a candiadate to soar to prominence. My advice is when lodging criticism: Don’t hate the “Player”. Hate the “Game”. Whether it is my candidate or your candidate, the game is played the same—so, don’t try to pretend like the rules are different just because the candidate may not be your candidate of choice. Even candidate of your own choosing may disappoint you in the end. Some do; some don’t. Hey, it’s politics.

To viewpoint, specifically, since no one has disrespected LULAC, why are you disrespecting the NAACP? Did you not know or perhaps, you do you not know your history in that all the younger Civil Rights organizations created years after the NAACP used the organization as a model to set up theirs?

Last point, not least, if new leadership is rising to the call of those who desire justice and fairness to FBISD , then I say Hurrah!!!!!

  4. MoRes says:

Ron, nice job! Mr. Viewpoint -aka Rodrigo – aka Snack Tax Man, please consider exiting the race. Although I appreciate your desire to serve I will use your own word and spelling -inefeective! Let Menendez, Albright and Daniels run the race.

    • Boogyman says:

Who ask you to butt in MoRes. If Rodrigo wants to run he and every other qualifed candiate should run if they do desire.

Who dies and left you as the Voter Boss?

      Answer, Nobody!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Burt Levine says:

Can anyone PLEASE tell me where they read ANYWHERE a bio, resume or ANYTHING on Patsy Taylor that indicates her level of education earned. I continue to read here and NOWHERE else the name Dr. Patsy Taylor. There is nothing from her or anyone anywhere to substantiate that, not that having that makes a person anymore eligible to become school board trustee.

    • Sugarland watch says:

Are you being paid to post such tripe Levine? And doesn’t your last comment also apply to Jonita, the part about having a Dr. in front of their name doesn’t make anyone more “eligible”. I thought you just had to be a citizen in the district, breathing and over 18 to be “eligible”. And ask your other client when he is going to pay his Texas Ethics Commission fines. big grin “

    • Devastating Diva says:

I do agree that the title of “Dr.” doesn’t mean that one is more qualified than the other to run.

There has been absolutely nothing published that has indicated that Taylor should be referred to as Dr. Taylor; therefore, I do not refer to her as such. Basically, Taylor is nonexistent in this race. We know NOTHING about her, and she has had ample opportunity to attend forums and/or make her views/position known.

  6. RonReynolds says:

As Past President of the Fort Bend NAACP I take issue with viewpoints continued negative statements regarding the NAACP. With all due respect, Rodrigo Carreon (a/k/a “Viewpoint”)I cannot continue remain silent while you make foolish statements regarding the NAACP remaining silent in this school board race. It is not the role of the NAACP nor any other civil rights group like LULAC, Urban League, ect. to get involved in a school board race.

If FBISD had an incident that seemed to violate the righs of minorities then they would speak out. We joined the community in leading the March for Marshall High School when the district was about to remove the EE Academy from Marshall. The NAACP was involved when FBISD was considering closing Willowridge High School. We held numerous rally’s and I don’t EVER recall seeing you nor Patsy Taylor at any of those events.

Dr. Reynolds was one of the key moderator that worked with the Fort Bends and the NAACP in leading these efforts. With the assistance of the community we were successful on both!

Let’s stay focused on the issues and platform regarding the candidates and STOP with the politics.

    • Boogyman says:

I agree with you Ron. But Rodrigo is entitled to his opinions.

    • Boogyman says:

I hate to be the one to tell you. But quite a few more people then Dr. Reynolds were responsible for the success of not closing Willowride or Marshall. There were more than just a few cocenred citizens who rallied in supoort of those schools and not all of those folks were east side folks.

  7. Sugarland watch says:

Aren’t you also working for her Burt and didn’t you work for her husband too in his election? Of course you are voting for them, the question is how many times….LOL

  8. willajbt says:

Has anyone met Dr. Patsy Taylor and if so,why hasn’t she publicly stated her position on FBISD issues to the voters?

  9. willajbt says:

    To viewpoint:
What does being a member of the FB NAACP have to do with running for a board position? Instead of spreading unkind comments about the NAACP, do something productive like asking Dr. Patsy Taylor to show up at the last forum. She has not appeared at the last two and most voters aren’t willing to vote for an invisible candidate whose position on issues is not known!

  10. willajbt says:

    To viewpoint:
I have read a number of posts on this site in which you attempt to present a negative view of the Fort Bend NAACP. Why are you doing this?
Dr. Reynolds is a only a member and her membership has nothing to do with her candidacy for a board position. If you really want to do something important, encourage Dr. Patsy Taylor to show up at the last forum, as she has missed two already. If she is truly interested in getting support, her position on issues important to taxpayers in the district is needed in order for the voters to make an informed decision. Many of us are undecided, but who is willing to vote for an invisible candidate!

  11. FCCresident says:

According to the google on you Mr. Levine and searches on this site, I would be very surprised if you didn’t vote for a paying client or encourage others to do the same. Aren’t you a hired political consultant? Makes one wonder if you didn’t prepare and deliver this release above. It seems I have read it many times before over the last few weeks. I do want to wish all the candidates though, with or without paid consultants, good luck in this race. After all these seats apparently are non-paid eelcted positions.

  12. Burt Levine says:

    Kaiser Roll:

How is the or an Independent School District a county related matter? The Fort Bend ISD is one of only seven school districts in Fort Bend County and it is NOT related to Fort Bend County government. If it was we not have a school board but rather it would be run by commissioners court. And yes I am voting for Dr. Jonita Reynolds. Please join too.

  13. kaiser roll says:

I don’t remember this Jonita calling me up and asking what I want for FBISD! and yet here she is explicitly staing residents (that’s me!) want the FBISD board to change leadership. the nerve of anyone who is willing to speak for me and make decisions regarding any county-related matters that may or may not pertain to my family is galling and disingenious! all that aside though…I’m always up for new leadership of anything we have going on around here.

  14. viewpoint says:

    FB NAACP is invisible inefeective!

    • SLfortbender says:

NAACP? Other than her membership/work in it (along with a multitude of others) why did you mention it? (I believe you’re trying to ridicule the group but can’t tell for sure based on your words.) How does it affect this school board election? FYI: Dr. Taylor, Dr. Reynolds’ opponent, is also black. Will it matter if she’s a member of the FB NAACP? If so, why?

I have no idea who I’m going to vote for in this position race. This is the first published article about either candidate in this position (I didn’t go to the debate Thursday night), and it struck me as generic, because “new leadership” isn’t a much of a campaign platform considering the incumbent isn’t running for re-election. I’m waiting to read about Dr. Taylor – hopefully pretty soon – and get to a candidate forum/debate if there are any more scheduled.

    • willajbt says:

Do something productive instead of bashing the FB NAACP! Get Dr. Taylor to appear publicly! Thanks!

      • Boogyman says:

The NAACP is very very important and intragle part of our community. So Be kind, don’t bash as good organization.
