Fund For Teachers Sends Sartartia Middle School Teachers On Summer Learning Odyssey

Fund for Teachers has awarded Amber Muscarello, an Algebra/Geometry teacher at Sartartia Middle School, and  Anna Davila, a 6th grade math teacher at SMS,  with a fellowship for self‐designed professional development.

Shown are the 2011 recipients of the Fund for Teachers - Summer Learning Odysseys.

The fellowship provides $9,914 to travel to Singapore, India and China for 14 days this summer.  The teachers will be focusing on how Asian schools teach mathematics to middle school children.  They will look specifically at the use of technology, integration of real world problems, and questioning strategies.  While on their travels they will also be making short videos of world landmarks to use in their math lessons.

“We are so grateful to Fund for Teachers for their generous support,” said Muscarello. “The classroom observations and cultural experiences in each country will empower us to come back to our classrooms with fresh ideas and a new perspective on mathematics teaching.”

Their travels will be chronicled on www.sartartiamath.blogspot.com.

Since 2001, 750 Houston teachers have received more than $2.8 million Fund for Teachers’ grants to experience summer learning odysseys that continue to transform learning for themselves and the 495 schools they represent.
