During its spring commencement ceremony, Houston Baptist University appointed Gene Wofford, retiring professor in Christianity and a resident of Lake Olympia in Missouri City, to the rank of professor emeritus.
Wofford, who earned his doctorate in theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, joined the HBU faculty in 1975.
In bestowing the title, HBU recognized Wofford for his “significant contributions to the School of Theology and his outstanding service as a teacher and mentor to generations of students.” In addition to helping develop theology coursework for the University’s new liberal arts core curriculum, he authored its current Christian Doctrine textbook, Basic Bible Beliefs.
Former students honored Wofford with the establishment of the Gene Wofford Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship in 2000 in appreciation of the role he played in encouraging them to be more dedicated Christian servants and witnesses.
In addition to his 36 years of service to HBU, Wofford has a long history of denominational leadership, including dedicated service as pastor of several Texas churches and service on the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas and the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.
