River Pointe Church To Host ‘Watermelon Spitacular’ Seed-Spitting Contest

River Pointe Church in Richmond will help celebrate Independence Day with its first-ever Watermelon Seed-Spitting Contest over the July 4th weekend.

Called the “Watermelon Spitacular,” the event is part the church’s summer “Saturdays are Special” series.

The church expects more than 600 people to attend the picnic and contest immediately following the 5 p.m. worship service on Saturday, July 2.

The contest is divided into four age groups – 1-5, 6-11, 12-17, 18 and up.   First-, second- and third-place prizes will be given in each category.

Each contestant will be given two seeds to spit. The final landing spot of the seed will be recorded and “bounces count.” Rick Branek, River Pointe’s front porch and spiritual growth pastor, will emcee the contest and hand out prizes to the winners at the end of the evening.

While the contest is being held, attendees are invited to enjoy free grilled hot dogs, side dishes, drinks and watermelon with their families on blankets by the lake.

“Saturdays are Special” at River Pointe is a summer series organized to attract a bigger crowd to the Saturday evening worship service.  This past weekend, the church saw nearly 700 people in attendance at the First Annual Classic Car and Motorcycle Show.

River Pointe Church is located on 92 acres at the corner of U.S. Hwy. 59 and The Grand Parkway.  It was founded in 1996 by Patrick and Lisa Kelley of Sugar Land and is currently 4,000 members strong.
