Citing Health Concerns, Weston Lakes Alderman Stepping Down From City Council

For the first time in its three year history as a municipality, Weston Lakes will see a change on its city council.

STEPPING DOWN - Citing personal health concerns, Weston Lakes Alderman Clifton Aldrich is stepping down from city council.

At its Tuesday meeting, city council “regretfully” accepted the resignation of Alderman Clifton Aldrich.

Aldrich has served since the city’s first city council election following its incorporation in 2008. He was the second-highest vote-getter in the at-large election, coming in behind only Mayor Mary Rose Zdunkewicz.

He was re-elected without opposition the following year.

During his tenure on council, Aldrich served as mayor pro-tem and was key in developing the city’s emergency management system.

In “regretfully” seconding the motion to accept Aldrich’s resignation, Alderman Trent Thomas praised his colleague for his service to the fledgling city.

“It’s been my privilege to know Alderman Aldrich for 31 years. He has been a dedicated, passionate individual who has always done his best for the citizens of Weston Lakes,” Aldrich said.

Zdunkewicz echoed Thomas’ remarks.

“There are no words that can express my gratitude for all the work he has done for this city,” she said.

Aldrich, who initially said nothing as the council acted on his resignation, ultimately shed a little light on his decision to step down.

“My decision (to step down) was personal and related to health reasons,” Aldrich said. “It was not a course I chose.”

He also said he would continue to volunteer with the city’s emergency management program at the request of the mayor. Weston Lakes’ emergency preparedness plan has become widely recognized as one of the best among small cities in Fort Bend County.

Zdunkewicz said she would accept letters of interest July 1 – 8 from residents wanting to serve out the remainder of Aldrich’s term of office. Council members were also asked to submit names of individuals they would like to see considered.

“It’s not an easy position,” the mayor cautioned.

The council will hold a special meeting July 12 to select Aldrich’s replacement.
