Coming to Sugar Land in October – Farmers Market

Meet and greet friends added bonus

By Elsa Maxey

The word has been spreading about a Farmers Market about to be open in Sugar Land that will operate for over two months through December 10. The Farmers Market at Imperial will be at Highway 90 at Brooks Street, and held every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with free, on-site parking. Next month is the kick off, so that means Saturday, October 1, will be the opening day of what may turn out to be a landmark event for Sugar Land, a touchtone perhaps, to tell us all there’s a festival of food and fun that will become a traditional Farmers Market preparing us for the holidays to come.

Those really going for the closest to the earth fresh goods will tell you that there’s something different about getting carrots, cucumbers, potatoes, tomatoes and other vegetables and fruits from the field at a farmers market. At the new farmers market, there will be more offerings, too. Cheeses, fresh baked goods, jam, honey, even fresh-cut flowers are planned.

Billed as Farmers Market and More at Imperial, the 11-week series presented by the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce will be held “rain or shine.” Along with the fresh produce, there will be local crafts, cooking demos, a landscaping showcase and live music, too. Nursery design professionals from Enchanted Gardens can probably be of great help answering landscaping questions, especially now after this area has undergone drought conditions that may have area residents rethinking their gardens.

“We researched and visited other Farmers Markets around the country and have taken the best aspects of each to make sure this event benefits both Sugar Land residents and local vendors,” said Keri Schmidt, president of the Fort Bend Chamber. The local area chamber also advises that there will be children’s activities and plans call for having appearances by the Sugar Land Skeeters mascot.

There will be a grand opening for vendors through September 15. Vendors interested in participating in the Famers Market at Imperial are asked to contact Gail Best, gail@fortbendcc.org, 281.491.0800; or Mary Von Tungeln, imperialfarmersmarket@gmail.com , 281.566.2160.
